2016 Auto Show Recap

Always a highlight at the beginning of the year, the Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS) this year didn’t disappoint. At Ralph Thayer Automotive, we were excited to see new and exciting introductions from Mazda, Hyundai and Volkswagen.

Mazda CX-9

This crossover SUV features a 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 227 horsepower that ensures the vehicle gets going quickly and climbs hills with ease. It has excellent handing, including easy steering and agility not always present in a SUV. This elegant model, with its smooth lines and oversized family grille, offers a choice of 18- or 20-inch wheels. The CX-9 is approximately an inch shorter than the 2015 model, but the wheelbase is 2 inches longer, which means more passenger leg room. The interior is sleek, with Nappa leather seats and Japanese rosewood. Safety is also a priority with blind spot monitoring, brake support for city driving and radar cruise control. Mazda also added sound-muffling materials to the interior, which makes for a quiet ride.

Genesis G90

The first release of Hyundai's luxury line, Genesis, is the G90, which is a full-size sedan featuring two versions. The higher end has a 5.0-liter V8 engine that can put out 420 horsepower, and the lower end features a twin-turbo 3.3-liter V6. Both come with rear-wheel drive and multi-link suspension. In the interior, there is plenty of leg room, as the driver’s seat reaches nearly to the midpoint of the car. There are also several amenities in the cabin, including speakers in the back and power seats. The G90 is the first in what Hyundai’s Genesis plans to be six cars by 2020.

Volkswagen’s BUDD-e

You might not be able to drive Volkswagen’s all-electric BUDD-e anytime soon, but the car manufacturer is moving forward with producing this microbus sometime before the end of the decade. The SUV/crossover vehicle will be created with VW’s MEB modular electric platform. The resulting environmentally friendly vehicle will have a motor on the front and rear.

We hope you enjoyed learning about these new introductions from this year’s Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS) as much as we did at Ralph Thayer Automotive. Come in soon to test drive one of the many exciting Mazda, Hyundai and Volkswagen models we feature.
