Summer Road Trip Checklist

Summer is here, which means it’s time to hop in the car and drive our nation’s scenic highways and byways. Before you hit the road for your automotive adventure, help ensure a memorable and safe journey by bringing your car into Ralph Thayer Automotive for a thorough auto checkup in Livonia.

It’s advisable to have the following checked on your car.

Tires. Considering that your car’s tires move you along the open road, it pays to have them checked for wear and tear. Our experienced auto technicians will ensure that your auto’s tires have good tread and pressure and aren’t damaged.

Engine oil. If it’s just about time for an oil change, have this done before a trip. Long distances with dirty oil can put undue pressure on your car. Inquire with the auto technician at Ralph Thayer as to the best oil for taking your car long distances. We can also check your car’s transmission and differential fluids.

Belts. Now is a good time to have the engine belt(s) in your car checked for wear-and-tear. A loose or broken belt can spell trouble on the road.

Engine coolant. The engine coolant, otherwise known as antifreeze, ensures that your car’s engine doesn’t get too hot while driving and overheat.

Brake system: It’s important that your brake fluid is clean before heading out, as dirty fluid can affect the performance of the brakes, and not in a good way. Our auto technicians will advise if a brake flush is necessary.

Battery: If your car battery is weak, you run the risk of getting stranded. At Ralph Thayer, we’ll check the battery’s connection and see if it’s still viable.

Items to Bring on the Road

When packing up, remember to bring some essentials. These include plenty of water, a flashlight with extra batteries, jumper cables, an extra cellphone charger, a first aid kit, a fire extinguisher, reflective warning triangles and flares, duct tape, blankets, a tool kit, foam tire sealant and a tire gauge and a rain poncho.

Also keep yourself and the car’s occupants energized by bringing a variety of snacks, including protein bars, nuts, canned fruit, peanut butter, beef jerky and whole grain crackers, cookies and cereal.
