At Ralph Thayer Automotive, we know how precious children are and advocate for their safety. That’s why we recently held a car seat safety check. During the event, we welcomed 23 cars and 37 children. As a result of the car seat safety check, Ralph Thayer handed out 29 new car seats to participants, while an additional eight seats were checked and/or corrected.
Ensure that your kids are safe on the road by following these car seat safety check steps.
Find the Ideal Car Seat
Three types of car seats exist. Which type you choose depends on the age and weight of your child. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), rear-facing car seats are designed for children from birth to age 3. Forward-facing car seats are recommended for children from ages 1 to 7, and booster seats are recommended for children ages 4 to 12. Once a child hits 8 to 12 years old, he or she can generally begin using a seat belt.
Suggested ages for the various types of car seats vary due to the weight of each child. The less your child weighs, the more likely he or she will be to stay in a car seat longer. The NHTSA has a handy calculator that allows you to determine the right type of car seat for your child.
You may find that though you’ve moved your child to a seatbelt, a booster seat is recommended. This occurred at the Ralph Thayer car safety seat check. Eleven children arrived in seatbelts when they actually required booster seats or even car seats.
Install the Car Seat Correctly
Proper installation is key to safety. Follow the manufacturer directions carefully when installing your car seat. The various types of car seats have specific instructions.
Register Your Car Seat for Recall Notifications
It’s imperative to the safety of your child that you are notified as soon as possible in the event that a car seat is recalled. The NHTSA allows you to register your car seat and will notify you if your model has a recall. You may also discover that a car seat has been recalled by participating in a car seat safety check.
